QGMAA Relief Efforts

Request for Assistance for the Victims of the Violent Storm that Ripped through the Quardu Gboni District in Lofa County, Liberia.

Dear Sir or Madam:

On October 2, 2009, a violent storm hit several towns in Quardu-Gboni District, severely injured several residents, destroyed over ninety (90) houses leaving the occupants homeless. According to Government estimate, forty houses were completely destroyed leaving 220 people homeless. However, based on the local residents' accounts, the damages are more than double the Government's estimates, because only houses with zinc roofs were were counted by the Government.

According to the District Commissioner, Honorable Mohamed Kamara, the storm completely destroyed 35 houses in Korlelah, two houses in Kanellah, and a school building in Yanmakamanue and that the road conditions to these town are dangerously impassable. Furthermore, reported losses do not include personal belongings such as important documents, money, food, clothing, etc.
Brothers and sisters, because of the enormity and the extent of this disaster, we the citizens of the District, and members of the Quardu Gboni Mandingo Association in the Americas (QGMAA: HYPERLINK "http://www.quardugboni.org" www.quardugboni.org) are kindly requesting your assistance first, to increase awareness of this devastation upon this region of Liberia in our efforts to amass relief on their behalf.

The aim of the QGMAA Relief Project is to provide immediate and most cost effective aid possible. Our goal is to raise $15,000 to immediately feed the displaced and homeless victims of this tragedy to prevent malnutrition and further health deterioration. In order to achieve this, we ask that you please inform all of your relatives, family, friends, and members of your organization as well as other appropriate media and encourage them to make financial donations payable to QUARDU GBONI MANDINGO ASSOCIATION IN THE AMERICAS through the Bank of America, Account#: 383003589313, address: 435 DARBY TERRACE, PHILADELPHIA, PA 19023 to help with the relief effort. Your donations will go directly to the individuals that need it most.

Currently, our effort is concentrated on providing the displaced, homeless and diseased victims healthy food, nourishment, shelters, medicines in the form of cash donations as these resources are virtually not available due to difficulty in reaching the most affected areas. In the long-run, rebuilding houses, providing clothing are also part of the project, but will not be initiated until immediate physical health concerns are pacified. QGMAA will also partner with local and international relief agencies to provide the best aid to the individuals that need it most. Please take whatever steps you can to promote this project. You can also assist the victims of this disaster by creating local awareness within your community that will lead to more contributions.

Please note that QGMAA does not presently have a 501(c)3 status; therefore, we apologize that your donations will not be tax deductable. If this is the only way for you to make contributions, please contact us immediately at 973-332-8794.
