In July 1990,
pitiless armed totting gangs of the
erstwhile NPFL of Charles Taylor marched
onto Barkedu and slaughtered hundreds of its
residents. July 12th remains the darkest day
in the existence of Barkedu. Each year,
descendants of the Quardu Gboni District
hold memorial service for the victims. The
Liberian leader visited the mass grave along
with her delegation during her brief visit
to the town. Mrs. Sirleaf was led to the
mass grave by Lofa County Representative
Mariama Jalabah, followed by other Liberian
Government officials including Defense
Minister Samukai, Police Director Munah Sieh,
Justice Kabineh Jan'eh, Hon. Musa Bility,
Public Work Minister Lusine Donzo, among
others. Hon. Sekou Korleh and other members
of the Barkedu Development Association also
participated in the viewing of the mass
grave. Writes Sidiki Trawally
